Midpoint on a number line and in the plane

Classroom activities

Things a class does rather than writes on. Each one is a finished PDF: print it, cut it up if it says so, and hand it round.

  • Midpoint or Other Endpoint — Cut & Glue Sort 25 minutes, including the cutting · 5 sheets

12 short questions about a point on a number line or in the plane, sorted without working anything out into add the two and halve, double the midpoint and take away the endpoint, or cannot be found — where the letters move, and a length or an axis is not a clue.

  • Midpoint on a Number Line & in the Plane — Answer Maze 10–15 minutes · 4 sheets

One page and nothing to prepare: 8 boxes, each asking for a midpoint or the other endpoint, on a number line or in the plane — where the wrong answer is half the distance, or the wrong two numbers averaged, and leads to a box that sends you back.

  • Midpoint on a Number Line & in the Plane — Mystery Picture 25–35 minutes · 4 sheets

25 squares of squared paper with no coordinates on them, each with three dots A, M and B: count the steps across and up from each end, fill the square only where M is the midpoint of AB, and a picture appears.

  • Midpoint on a Number Line & in the Plane — Scavenger Hunt a full class period · 13 sheets

16 cards round the room: the midpoint of two points on a number line or in the plane, or the other endpoint from one endpoint and the midpoint — forwards and backwards interleaved, a wrong answer lands on a card that sends the group back, and a clean run is 8 lines on the record sheet.
