Defining rotations; rotations in the coordinate plane

Classroom activities

Things a class does rather than writes on. Each one is a finished PDF: print it, cut it up if it says so, and hand it round.

  • Rotations in the Coordinate Plane: Which Quarter Turn — or None? — Cut & Glue Sort 25 minutes, including the cutting · 5 sheets

12 pieces — rules in letters, points and their images, turns in words, and an L with its image on squared paper — sorted into the quarter turn counterclockwise, the quarter turn clockwise, and "no turn about the origin does this", where a turn about another center, two points at different distances and the reflection in y = −x wait for the student who reads only the direction word.

  • Rotations: Which Way, and About What? — Answer Maze 10–15 minutes · 4 sheets

8 boxes on one page: turn a point a quarter or three-quarter turn about the origin, a half turn about a center that is not the origin, pick the rule in letters, find the center of a half turn and the one point it leaves where it is — a wrong answer goes to a box that sends the student back, and the row of box numbers at the foot is the check.

  • Rotations: Did It Land in the Right Place? — Mystery Picture 25–35 minutes · 4 sheets

25 squares, each a point, a turn named one of several ways, and where the point is said to land: fill the square if that is the right image. The wrong ones turn the wrong way round, write the pair backwards, take the half turn for the reflection in y = −x, or use the origin's rule about another center — and when every square is right, a picture appears.

  • Rotations in the Coordinate Plane — Scavenger Hunt a full class period · 13 sheets

16 cards round the room: turn a point a quarter, half or three-quarter turn about the origin, each named more than one way; undo a turn; find the turn from one point and use it on another; and a half turn about a center that is not the origin, where the origin's rule fails — every answer is a point, a wrong answer lands on a card that sends the group back, and a clean run is 8 lines on the record sheet.
