Reflections: drawing, describing, defining

Classroom activities

Things a class does rather than writes on. Each one is a finished PDF: print it, cut it up if it says so, and hand it round.

  • Reflections: Does It Name One? — Cut & Glue Sort 25 minutes, including the cutting · 5 sheets

12 descriptions of moving a flag, sorted into one reflection, not a reflection and not enough — where “the reflection that sends P to Q” names one, going straight across the page to a slanted mirror does not, and “reflect F in the line through A” does not say which.

  • Reflections: Which Point Is the Image? — Answer Maze 10–15 minutes · 4 sheets

One page and nothing to prepare: 8 boxes, each a mirror line, a point P and two points across it — the image, and the point a student gets by carrying only half the definition: a path that is not perpendicular to the mirror, or the wrong distance past it.

  • Reflections: Is It the Image? — Mystery Picture 25–35 minutes · 4 sheets

25 squares, each a flag, a mirror line and somebody’s drawing of its image: fill the square if it is the reflection — the flag reflected in a straightened mirror, slid across without turning over, put too close or too far, or turned half a turn stays white.
